Apollo 1 was to have been the first manned test flight of the Command Module for the lunar landing programme. Tragically, a cabin fire during a launch pad test killed Command Pilot Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom, Senior Pilot Ed White, and Pilot Roger B. Chaffee.
